Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been practiced for over 5000 years in humans and animals.

Traditional Chinese Medicine theory holds that Qi (vital energy) flows throughout the body along energetic pathways called channels. These channels connect the exterior of the body with the interior. Each channel is associated with a specific internal organ that reflects the physiological and pathological conditions of that organ. When the flow of qi is disrupted or blocked, it can lead to a variety of health problems. Acupuncture points are located along these channels, and when stimulated can relieve pain and restore normal body functions.

Acupuncture points have specific locations and their effects have been documented over millennia. They have been shown to improve blood flow and promote the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. Veterinary acupuncture is safe and effective when performed by a trained, certified veterinary medicine practitioner. The needles used are very thin and typically cause little or no discomfort to the animal. Some pets may even become relaxed and fall asleep during treatment.

Any human or pet, can benefit from acupuncture. Acupuncture can be used to treat numerous ailments from diarrhea to kidney failure. It is especially effective for the treatment of chronic pain. It is commonly used to treat musculoskeletal pain in pets suffering from arthritis, chronic joint disease and neurological conditions of the back and neck. By decreasing pain and inflammation, acupuncture can help pets feel more comfortable and able to move around more easily. Other commonly treated conditions include skin disease, organ dysfunction (kidney, liver heart), diabetes and other hormone disorders and digestive issues. It can be an effective treatment option for pets who have not responded well to other forms of treatment or who may be unable to take certain medications due to underlying health conditions. In addition to treating specific conditions, acupuncture can be used to improve the overall health and well-being of geriatric pets suffering from chronic disease conditions.

There are multiple acupuncture techniques and these different methods techniques allow for flexibility in veterinary acupuncture because individual pets respond in different ways to acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture and herbal medicine are typically used together because clinical results can be obtained more quickly. The combined effects are also stronger, this is especially true in the treatment of difficult cases. Acupuncture should be considered as part of a comprehensive treatment plan and is often used in conjunction with other therapies, such as conventional medicine, therapeutic nutrition, chiropractic, laser and physical therapy.
